Types of Cancer

Bone Cancer

Doctors may diagnose bone cancer in adults through a blood test to determine the level of an enzyme called alkaline phosphatase. A large amount of alkaline phosphatase can be found in the blood when the cells that form bone tissue are very active. Growing children, when a broken bone is mending, or when disease or a tumor causes production of abnormal bone tissue, the level of this enzyme is high. As high levels of this enzyme are normally be found in growing children and adolescents, this test is not a completely reliable indicator of bone cancer.

The fresh juice of Rosa damascena Mill. flower exhibited promising in vitro antioxidant potential (Achuthan, et al, 2003). Rosa Damascena is the Latin name of the Rose plant which is a natural source for  improving human health.According to Avicenna (A.D. 980-1037), the famous Arab physician, a rose was widely cultivated in Syria for the manufacture of rosewater and for use in medicines. The partially purified acetone fraction (AF) from silica gel column chromatography was found to be the active fraction with antioxidant properties. This active faction required for 50% inhibition of superoxide radical production, hydroxyl radical generation and lipid peroxide formation were 13.75, 135 and 410 µg/ml, respectively. Oral administration of AF at 50 mg/kg body weight significantly reduced the serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), glutamine pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and glutamine oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) activity and lipid peroxide level in rats receiving an acute dose of CCl4. This indicated that R. damascena could protect against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity, possibly by its free radical scavenging activity.

In stage IV, prostate cancer has metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body, such as the bladder, rectum, bone, liver, lungs, or to lymph nodes near or far from the prostate. Metastatic prostate cancer often spreads to the bones. Stage IV prostate cancer may also be called stage D1 or stage D2 prostate cancer ( http://www.cancer.gov/cancerinfo/pdq/treatment/prostate/patient/ ) .
